For its "Pick a Shade. Any Shade"
project, Pottery Barn wanted a set of split-page inserts
for a full-color product binder designed to allow the customer
to mix and match lamp shades with stands.
The Challenge
•
The
custom 4-ring binder had already been produced using
a matte laminated Cougar Opaque Natural lithowrap.
•
The
split-page inserts needed to be printed on 24 pt.
board, but Pottery Barn wanted an exact match to
the look and feel of the binder cover.
•
The layouts for the insert pages had been designed with a full-bleed, screen-built background intended to match the color saturation of the Opaque Natural lithowrap.
•
The
split-page format and the corresponding crossovers
would require exact color match from press form
to press form.
The Strategy
•
We recommended substituting a custom-mix
PMS for the background to ensure the exact match
required.
•
The Heidelberg 6-color CD74 not only enabled us to run
the necessary spot color inline with the 4-color
process, but also, unlike many 6-color presses, could handle the heavy board effortlessly.
•
Perfect
registration on the press further enabled us to
eliminate trap altogether and image the film with
a one-to-one fit, as the designer was concerned
about a possible halo effect if we were to do the
usual trap of 4-color to PMS.
